Former NDC MP for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has slammed former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, over his motion to remove four MPs who are contesting the December 7, 2024 parliamentary elections as independent candidates.

The motion, which is backed by the Minority side and opposed by the Majority was subjected to arguments from both sides when Parliament resumed sitting yesterday, October 15.

After listening to the marathon debate, Speaker Alban Bagbin fixed the ruling in two days time , promising to give a reasoned, well-thought-out ruling.

Useless motion
But, Ras Mubarak issued a statement yesterday describing the motion as useless. “The life of this parliament is less than three months from coming to an end. There’s little or no political capital from removing the MPs going independent.

“While we await the decision of the Speaker, I must say the motion was a bizarre and shocking frolic that completely ignores the most pressing issues in the country,” he asserted.

Priority
To the former legislator, MPs who spoke in support of the motion completely ignored one of the issues high up on the minds of Ghanaians yearning for a credible election in December , that is, how to get the Electoral Commissioner to produce a free and fair election on December 7. “That should be the priority of every elected Member, especially those in opposition,” he stated , adding, “What is the electoral fortune of the motion? “

Defending constitution
Ras Mubarak made mention of the former Minority Leaders assertion that he was defending the constitution. But he disagreed. “At a time defending the constitution would have been effective and productive, he and just about everyone who spoke in support of the motion abandoned their constitutional obligations, and betrayed the sacred and hallowed oath of office.

“At a time when it mattered most, the former Minority Leader abandoned his duty to defend and uphold the constitution.“
