Minority Will Only Join National Economic Dialogue If… – Kojo Oppong Nkrumah To John Mahama

The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that the Minority Caucus in Parliament will not participate in the government’s proposed National Economic Dialogue unless the thousands of public sector workers who were recently sacked are reinstated.

President John Mahama, while presenting the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, invited the Minority to participate in the Dialogue.

Speaking on Citi FM on Thursday, he said the Minority is open to participating in the dialogue aimed at evaluating Ghana’s economic challenges, but only if the government first addresses the issue of workers who have been laid off. According to the MP, these workers were unfairly dismissed from their jobs despite being rightfully employed in the public sector.

“We are happy to participate in the National Economic Dialogue if the administration will reinstate the thousands of young people that it has sacked from public sector jobs,” Nkrumah declared.

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah argued that it is unjust to sack young people from their jobs and then invite the Minority to discuss the country’s economic recovery without addressing this grievance. “You don’t get to sack young people from the jobs that they have been rightly employed to, and say that after you had sacked them, and you are home, you are inviting us to a national economic dialogue. Reinstate them, invite us to a national economic dialogue, and we will participate in it,” he said.

The National Economic Dialogue, spearheaded by President Mahama, is an initiative aimed at evaluating Ghana’s economic situation and fostering consensus on key policies that will drive structural reforms and support economic recovery. The dialogue is part of the government’s broader strategy to reset the country’s economic trajectory and encourage collaboration among political stakeholders.
