The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honored Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Running Mate for the 2024 elections, by naming a new hostel after him.

This recognition is for his significant contributions to education in Ghana.

The event took place on the university’s campus, highlighting Dr. Prempeh’s leadership as Minister for Education and his key role in improving infrastructure in higher education.

Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, praised Dr. Prempeh for his vital contributions to the university’s growth.

He specifically noted Dr. Prempeh’s efforts in securing funding and overseeing the construction of the new facility, now called the “Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel.”

During his time as Minister for Education, Dr. Prempeh was dedicated to increasing access to education and fostering a supportive learning environment. Dr. Konadu remarked,

“This hostel is a symbol of his commitment to enhancing infrastructure for higher education.”

The new hostel will house over 5,000 students, helping to alleviate accommodation issues on campus and creating a better setting for academic success.

Dr. Konadu emphasized the importance of strong leadership in reaching such achievements, stating, “Your support for this project was not just about funding but ensuring that institutions like UPSA could meet the rising demand for quality education.”

Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, the Vice Chancellor of UPSA, also praised Dr. Prempeh’s lasting influence in Ghana’s education system.

He said, “Dr. Prempeh’s impact on education in Ghana is unforgettable. From the Free Senior High School policy to improving our infrastructure, his leadership continues to change lives. Naming this hostel after him is our way of honoring his contributions.

“This honor comes three years after UPSA conferred on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in July 2021.

The award celebrated his sterling leadership and dedication to advancing education in Ghana. In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Prempeh expressed profound gratitude to UPSA for the recognition.

“This honor is not just mine but for all who believe in the power of education to transform lives. I remain committed to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are pivotal to our national development,” he stated.

The naming of the hostel solidifies UPSA’s appreciation for Dr. Prempeh’s efforts and underscores the university’s commitment to celebrating leaders who champion the cause of education.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, faculty members, students, and representatives of various educational bodies, marking a significant moment in the institution’s history.
